We recently completed these two custom carved and hand-painted signs for a family vacation home at the Jersey Shore. Each sign was designed to give the home its own distinctive identity while sharing a coordinated nautical style, color palette, and level of detail.
Both signs were carved from High-Density Urethane (HDU), an exceptionally durable material that is well suited for the demanding coastal environment. The dimensional lettering, borders, banners, nautical emblems, and scenic illustrations were carefully carved and then painted by hand to bring out the depth and character of every detail.
The “Valhalla by the Sea” sign features a dramatic ocean sunset, dunes, an American flag, and raised lettering. Its companion, “The Crow’s Nest at Valhalla by the Sea,” adds a playful touch with a cigar-smoking crow dressed as a ship’s captain, complete with a ship’s wheel, evening sky, and glass of whiskey.
Projects like this are especially enjoyable because they allow us to create something highly personal that becomes part of the character of the home. These signs are more than identification—they are original pieces of dimensional artwork designed to be enjoyed by the family and their guests for many years.
