Our New Toy
We've had our eye on this manual steel tube bender for quite some time! We can now bend our own steel into beautiful curves by hand on this small hand crank tool. With this we can create our own beautiful scroll sign hangers, steel frames and steel accents without having to outsource. Decorative steel frames add such beauty to traditional carved signs like ours. Below are a few examples
We Never Stop Learning
Today we had the pleasure of attending a workshop sponsored by Architectural Iron Designs in Plainfield, NJ (http://www.archirondesign.com) and Sculpt Nouveau finishes. Sculpt Nouveau is an amazing company basis in California that manufactures metal finishing products. This includes specialized acids, paints, stains and waxes to give specialiad or aged finishes to metal or the same result to any product their iron, bronze, brass aluminum or silver paints applied. The samples below show just a few of the amazing effects that can be achieved using their products. With these products we can create a sign with an aged bronze finish for the fraction of the cost and weight of the real thing. We have been using these products for years in our finest carved signsand this was a great opportunity to try some of the new products available and meet first hand some of the company technicians developing some of the newest patinas available. Last night while watching the HBO movie featuring Robert DiNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer I was pleasantly surprised to see and old friend, a sign I made for the U.S. Federal Building at 26 Federal Plaza in NYC over 25 years ago. Back then the Federal Government was my biggest client and I made a lot of signs for this building. Its great to see they are still at work helping people get where they need to go!
20 Years ago I had a similar surprise when I turned on MTV in 1996 and saw Eric Clapton sitting in front of one of my signs in Hoboken Station for the music video for his song "Change the World " that was featured in the movie Phenomenon starring John Travolta. Its a big blurry, but it sure gave me a hell of a thrill at the time!
